Orchestration is both an art and a science, and it’s my favorite aspect of composing. There is so much more to it than simply knowing ranges and transpositions. A good orchestrator must…

• Have an intimate knowledge of each instrument’s capabilities…
• Know how to voice a chord for proper balance and maximum impact…
• Know how to achieve any desired effect (ethereal, heavy, thick, light, balanced, shrill, etc.), and how to create specific textures and special effects…
• And most importantly… have an intuitive “feel” for how to handle the orchestra and turn the above knowledge into a work of art.

There is no substitute for knowledge, experience, and artistic sensibility. My experience as a composer for all types of ensembles has sharpened my orchestration chops. I also picked up many “secrets” by studying orchestration with Scott Smalley, legendary orchestrator for Danny Elfman, Basil Polidouros, Alan Silvestri, David Newman, and other top film composers.
